Start near eye level
For an open wall, place the visual center of the artwork about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. This aligns with common gallery hanging practice and works as a useful first mark, not an unbreakable rule.
Use the center of the framed object, including mat and frame. For a group, treat the full arrangement as one shape and find its center.
Let furniture change the equation
Above a sofa, bed, or console, relate the art to the furniture rather than the floor. A gap of roughly 6 to 10 inches often keeps the objects visually connected.
High ceilings do not require art to float upward. Most viewing still happens at human height. Use a larger work or taller arrangement to address the room instead of raising a small piece beyond comfortable sight.
