Amara Nwosu

Lagos, Nigeria

A surface should remember every decision, including the ones I tried to erase.

Biography

Amara Nwosu builds paintings through removal as much as addition. Raised near the Lagos lagoon, she studied printmaking before turning to large canvases where scraped pigment and quick charcoal marks hold equal weight.

Artist statement

I am interested in the instant when a place stops being geography and becomes memory. Color carries the first impression; abrasion records what time edits away.

In the studio

Nwosu works on unstretched linen laid across low tables. She moves between brushes, rubber blades, graphite, and hand-ground mineral color, allowing each layer to dry before cutting back into it. A recent wearable series folds the same painted rhythms into hammered silver forms.
