Priya Raman
Chennai, India
“Nothing in the work is neutral; even the ground has weather.”
Biography
Priya Raman makes earthen abstractions from cotton paper, casein, powdered stone, and natural dyes. Her training in conservation gave her an unusual sensitivity to how fragile materials age.
Artist statement
I treat the studio as a place of slow accumulation. A stain, seam, or repaired tear can hold a longer history than an image.
In the studio
Sheets are dyed, folded, buried in dry pigment, and reassembled. Raman often leaves joins visible, turning repair into both structure and drawing. Her repair-led practice also includes soft, wearable fiber objects built through crochet, wrapping, and hand stitching.
