Inês Valera

Porto, Portugal

Darkness is not an absence; it is a slower kind of information.

Biography

Inês Valera paints after dark, using the riverfront and industrial edges of Porto as emotional rather than descriptive sources. Deep blue grounds are interrupted by small flashes of electric color.

Artist statement

Night reduces the world but heightens its smallest signals. My paintings ask how little light is needed to orient a body.

In the studio

Valera builds thin oil glazes over black gesso, then introduces matte passages of wax and powdered graphite. Reflective marks shift as the viewer changes position. A compact pendant series treats reflection and suspended weight as another form of nocturne.
