Biography
Eleanor Whitaker has worked in lower Manhattan since the late 1980s, building a patient language of scraped color and measured interruption. Earlier work in book conservation still informs the care with which she prepares linen and allows previous layers to remain visible.
Artist statement
Whitaker treats blue as a form of depth rather than atmosphere. Each painting is built until its divisions feel architectural, then loosened through abrasion, wax, and faint graphite decisions.
In the studio
Working seated at a broad low table, Whitaker alternates thin oil veils with cold wax and dry graphite. She rotates the canvas throughout the day, testing each interval in both north light and the flatter illumination of evening.
