Emil Novak

Coimbra, Portugal

The longest note is often the one that has already ended.

Biography

Emil Novak studied sound composition before moving from Prague to Coimbra and committing to painting. His nocturnes translate intervals, silence, and sustained tones into layered fields.

Artist statement

I do not paint music. I borrow its ability to shape time, then let color create a duration of its own.

In the studio

Novak alternates digital sketches with slow hand-painted surfaces. Transparent acrylic, interference pigment, and soft graphite create images that appear to brighten from within. His smallest works are cast and oxidized rings that hold the same tension as the painted intervals.
