Biography
Henry Caldwell spent much of his career drawing sets, public interiors, and restoration plans. In retirement he has distilled that knowledge into spare works on paper where thresholds, harbor structures, and erased construction lines carry equal authority.
Artist statement
Caldwell is less interested in depicting buildings than in showing how a person imagines moving through them. His drawings preserve uncertainty alongside measured form.
In the studio
Caldwell works on heavy cotton sheets with graphite, ink, casein, and thin watercolor. He rules initial scaffolds, erases aggressively, and returns with broad washes that leave only fragments of the first plan.
