Maeve O'Connell
Galway, Ireland
“A line can be a border, a measure, or a way home.”
Biography
Maeve O'Connell creates restrained paper works informed by tidal charts, field boundaries, and the practical diagrams found in old boatsheds. The references remain present without becoming maps.
Artist statement
I use rules so that small accidents become legible. Repetition sets the rhythm; weather and touch provide the variation.
In the studio
O'Connell combines drypoint, blind embossing, graphite, and hand-cut paper. Most works pass through the press several times, each registration slightly shifted. She also builds digital editions from shifted registrations that echo the pressure of the printmaking press.
