Hana Mori

Kanazawa, Japan

Blank paper is active; every mark changes its temperature.

Biography

Hana Mori makes sparse works from kozo paper, graphite, chalk, and pressure. Apprenticeships in paper conservation shaped her respect for empty space and reversible gestures.

Artist statement

A mark becomes more precise when it has enough quiet around it. I work toward that quiet without confusing it for simplicity.

In the studio

Mori scores and embosses paper before adding near-weightless graphite lines. Pieces are worked flat, then repeatedly lifted into changing daylight to assess their relief. Editioned digital works extend her embossed surfaces through calibrated color and light.
