Meredith Shaw
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
“Accuracy matters most when it gives imagination something firm to depart from.”
Biography
Meredith Shaw spent years illustrating field research before reshaping botanical observation into an independent studio practice. Her drawings enlarge stems, seed heads, and branching systems until they become both precise specimens and open abstractions.
Artist statement
Shaw keeps observation and invention in productive tension. A plant provides structure, while watercolor and erasure allow several seasons of growth to occupy the same sheet.
In the studio
Shaw studies fresh and dried plants under magnification, then redraws them across heavy cotton paper. Watercolor arrives in transparent fields; colored pencil and graphite restore selected structural details.
