Emily Hartwell
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
“A fold is a small piece of architecture that can still change its mind.”
Biography
Emily Hartwell is an emerging printmaker who came to the studio through public-space research and architectural archives. Her screenprints and folded-paper works turn civic shapes into crisp arrangements that remain visibly handmade.
Artist statement
Hartwell is drawn to the way official spaces use geometry to guide behavior. Folding and collage let her redirect those shapes toward play, pause, and visual contradiction.
In the studio
Hartwell exposes her own screens, prints short runs on warm cotton paper, and introduces cuts or folds after the ink cures. She works with a narrow palette so physical relief and alignment remain easy to read.
