Kaisa Niemi
Helsinki, Finland
“Light does not reveal the landscape; it rebuilds it.”
Biography
Kaisa Niemi works from the low winter light and long transitional seasons of southern Finland. Her landscapes are quiet in palette but structurally bold.
Artist statement
I paint the point at which weather becomes architecture. Snow, fog, and thaw reorganize the land more radically than any building.
In the studio
Niemi lays translucent oil over cool grey grounds and uses broad handmade brushes that leave the weave of the linen visible. Final details are sparse and sharply placed. Her editioned prints reduce winter structure to pressure, overlap, and a narrow range of tone.
