Biography
Graham Foster apprenticed with architectural stone carvers before moving toward freestanding abstraction. He now makes quiet sculptures that place carved limestone in poised relationships with narrow steel supports and carefully judged gaps.
Artist statement
Foster approaches mass through balance. A block can appear lighter when its support is disclosed, and a narrow interval can carry as much force as the stone around it.
In the studio
Drawings lead to plaster studies, but the final decisions occur in stone. Foster leaves selected chisel marks intact, polishes only contact points, and fabricates dark steel elements to read as lines rather than hardware.
