Sculpture

Nathan Cole

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

A sculpture can show its uncertainty and still stand.

Biography

Nathan Cole studied structural engineering before turning to sculpture, and his work still tests how little support a form can disclose. Rough cast plaster sits within spare steel frameworks that appear provisional but are carefully resolved.

Artist statement

Cole uses support as a visible subject. Heavy and fragile elements share the same structure, making balance feel negotiated rather than inevitable.

In the studio

Cole casts plaster in reusable timber molds, breaks and recombines selected sections, then fits a welded steel armature directly to them. Surfaces are left chalky so handling, repair, and gravity remain apparent.
