Biography
Samira Benyoussef arranges common vessels, fruit, cut stems, and folded cloth into spare still lifes. Her interest lies less in abundance than in the exact social distance between objects.
Artist statement
A still life is a temporary community. Each object changes because of what has been placed beside it.
In the studio
Benyoussef paints in casein and oil on linen, using matte underlayers and a small number of glossy final passages. Objects are moved throughout the process. Botanical prints accompany her paintings as direct records of stems, seed heads, and pressure.
