Sofia Alvarez

Miami, Florida, United States

The most intense color is often the color an object keeps inside.

Biography

Sofia Alvarez was raised in a Cuban American family of builders and decorative painters. Her current practice joins hand-built ceramic volumes with painted interior color, using paired forms to explore support, shelter, and private space.

Artist statement

Alvarez treats color as something an object can contain. Matte exteriors slow the eye, while saturated cavities make interior space feel active and protected.

In the studio

Alvarez coils and slabs several clay bodies together, allowing seams and pressure marks to remain. Surfaces are finished with slip and mineral wash; cobalt glaze is reserved for cavities that catch and deepen light.
