Kofi Mensah

Cape Town, South Africa

A strong line does not need to become solid.

Biography

Kofi Mensah constructs open metal sculptures from bent rod, perforated sheet, and salvaged fasteners. His structures suggest tools, shelters, and animals without resolving into any one thing.

Artist statement

I draw in space with material that resists the hand. The tension between the line I want and the line steel permits is the work.

In the studio

Mensah makes full-scale wire studies before cutting steel. Welds remain visible, while surfaces are blackened, waxed, or allowed to develop controlled oxidation. Monumental fiber pieces use knot, tension, and hanging weight as counterparts to welded line.
