Owen Mercer

San Francisco, California, United States

Light does not decorate a wall; it changes where the wall seems to begin.

Biography

Owen Mercer came to light work through exhibition fabrication and experimental film. His young practice pairs precise built objects with projected fields, asking how a room can be edited by a line of color rather than filled with an image.

Artist statement

Mercer uses light as a physical interval. The fixtures remain legible, but their purpose is to redirect attention toward edges, corners, and the time it takes an eye to adjust.

In the studio

Mercer prototypes in cardboard and low-voltage components before fabricating anodized aluminum housings and cast acrylic lenses. Every installation is tested at several brightness levels and documented with clear mounting specifications.
