Biography
Reid Callahan moved from scientific glassblowing into kiln casting, bringing an unusual attention to optical thickness and internal stress. His low vessels and elongated forms use aperture, trapped air, and metallic inclusions to make light behave as material.
Artist statement
Callahan treats glass as a slow lens. The work is shaped to delay recognition, so an edge, seam, or suspended line appears differently as the viewer moves.
In the studio
Wax positives are invested, burned out, and filled with carefully graded glass billets for multi-day firings. Callahan cold-works selected planes and leaves others softly cast, balancing optical precision with evidence of heat.
