Biography
Valeria Montoya works with henequen, cotton, and indigo in a contemporary textile practice shaped by the climate of Yucatán. Her large wall pieces alternate open lattice, dense fields, and long gathered fringes.
Artist statement
Montoya uses weave density to describe heat, shade, and movement without turning cloth into landscape. The work remains an object whose air, weight, and irregular edge are fully visible.
In the studio
Montoya prepares henequen by hand, combines it with softer cotton warps, and dyes selected sections in layered indigo baths. Pieces are shifted between vertical frames and the floor as tension and fringe are resolved.
