Biography
Maren Brooks trained in textile design and spent several years fabricating theater environments. Her wall and suspended works borrow from temporary structures, combining open weave, braided bands, and fine metal filament.
Artist statement
Brooks uses soft material to describe load, span, and support. Cloth becomes most articulate when it is asked to hang, bow, gather, or reveal what is holding it.
In the studio
Brooks develops each piece directly at full scale, pinning grids to the wall before weaving and knotting by hand. Stainless filament is introduced sparingly to hold curves that wool or cotton would otherwise release.
